CHOOSING THE RIGHT HEAD PROTECTION
TYPE I vs TYPE II
Type I and Type II hard hats and safety helmets are designed for different types of impacts. The protection you need is determined by the hazards you face on the jobsite.
TYPE II TESTING CRITERIA
Type II head protection meets all Type I performance criteria in addition to three further requirements for multi-directional protection.
02_OFF-CENTER PENETRATION
A penetrator is dropped vertically, while the hard hat is rotated at various angles above a set test line. The penetrator must not make contact with the head form.
01_IMPACT ENERGY ATTENTUATION
The head protection is dropped onto a spherical object at different angles above a designated test line to ensure it effectively absorbs impact energy.
03_CHINSTRAP RETENTION
If the head protection includes a chin strap, it must pass a retention test. The chin strap must stay attached and not stretch more than one inch in length. This is optional.
